I first read this book as a young teenager, I'm now 69, it created an impression on me. A dystopian future that to me a a kid seemed entirely possible. Sadly as an adult I still believe something like this is possible, the only bright spot.......I won't be around to experience it!Product details

Following along the same lines as the Space Merchants- another send-up of a dire corporate futuristic setting.
Again Pohl and Kornbluth show the haves and have nots in the futuristic society and it really hits home today. While the Space Merchants was well reviewed- the NY Times praises the book- Gladiator At-Law seems to have flown under the radar. Don't let the awful artwork on the cover scare you off- this is worth reading.
You could call it the Hunger Games of its day. Gladiator at Law, vintage sci fi novel, has a few weaknesses as a novel. But they are not important, compared with the brilliant and prophetic depiction of a world controlled by corporations. Anybody who reads the novel's description of the ultimate corporate villain--the conglomerate known as Green, Charlesworth--and its two horrific CEOs, will look around at our world today and say, "Mmm hmm Green, Charlesworth."
This and their others written years ago were way ahead of their time.
And they are fun too. Worth your time
C. M. Kornbluth was a genius. Frederick Pohl was a competent editor, who wrote a whole lot better when he was writing with Kornbluth (on his own, he's still just...competent). Their collaborations were the best 'social satire' science-fiction of the 1950's. At the time, sf was a literary ghetto...or their books (and Kornbluth's solo work, Syndic) would be best social satire of the 1950's, period.
I read this when I was in my early 20s & loved it, my old copy was a paperback and finally self-destructed, So I wanted a hardcover copy to grow old with. It's a scary vision of the future, where if you don't work for a corporation, your life is condemned to a lower caste existence complete with bread & circuses. It's old fashioned in some ways, futuristic in others , but it's Frederik Pohl, so the writing is Great.
This book is set in approximately the same type of dystopian future as The Space Merchants and The Merchants War. I first read them in the 70s, but many of the "predictions" still work today. A little dated, but well crafted and believable. What I like about older SF is there's none of the 5 pages of descriptive adjectives that seems to be all the rage; every word is designed to further the plot.
This is one of my favorite Pohl and Kornbluth novels, just behind The Space Merchants (which I devoutly hope is coming soon for the as well). Old time science fiction as social commentary. As dark in its way as Phillip K Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but with a super plot and a horrific extrapolation of the Arena into a culture controlled entirely by money and Illuminati-style power.
