Will Nathan takes aim at the legal profession in general, and a few San Francisco firms and lawyers in particular, in his second novel. If you cross the cynicism of Jonathan Swift with the goofiness of Dave Barry, you'd have a fair description of Mr. Nathan's stylistic approach to his task. Without setting forth a laundry list of spoilers, suffice it to say that anyone familiar with the implosion of one of San Francisco's largest and most prestigious law firms, and its managing partner will find Mr. Nathan's novel a particularly compelling read. Even those unfamiliar with the legal profession will enjoy the "gossip column" revelations of back-room schemes and plots among the legal elite. For those who yearn for the "happily ever after" ending, this book is not for you. For the rest of us though, lawyer and non-lawyer alike, "Bad Law" is, indeed, a good read.Product details

This is a must read for any law student or young lawyer thinking of joining a big law firm; or, for that matter, anyone interested in a deftly comic insight on the twisted personalities and internal politics of the banks and corporate law firms which first bubbled, then wrecked our economy. Does for early 21st century law practice what Upton Sinclair's The Jungle did for early 20th century meat-packing. I think Sinclair's protagonists might have smelled better. Save it for your grandkids when they want to know what it was like to be a lawyer in the year 2000.
As a young man starting out in commercial real estate in the late 70's I had the good fortune and opportunity on behalf of clients to be in and around a number of large SF law firms such as Bronson Bronson & McKinnon, Brobeck Phleger, Heller Ehrman and MoFO. I was and still am fascinated by the individuals, their upbringing and backgrounds, their clientele and what motivates them......money, power, fame or doing a great job for the client. BAD LAW spells it out and tells it all from the inside out, this is up close,personal, eye to eye. There were no voicemails or emails to hide behind, your only means of communication was face to face, the telephone or the IBM typewriter.
These heads of state went to the same schools, ate at the same restaurants, were members of the same clubs (Olympic, Pacific Union and The Bohemian), lived in the same neighborhoods and ferociously competed for business against one another.
Will Nathan provides the backbone and insight on what transpires in the big firms and what it takes to be successful, stay successful and then ....give it all back.
If you like the business of law, are an attorney, know an attorney or have ever hired one this is a must read. The firms and the people are real, many of which can be seen each and every day on Market or Montgomery Street.

Wondrous, if not positively gleeful in its relentless brutality, Will Nathan's Bad Law is a seething tale of the caustic nature of power, greed, and the inevitable bad end that awaits those who blind themselves to their own nature. Set in the pay-to-play civil law mills of San Francisco, Bad Law charts the dogged rise, decline, and chilling revenge of Shane Sullivan, a troubled young attorney who sharpens his fangs at Broward, Phillips & Hamburg, a veritable switching yard of corporate wealth and home to some of the keenest jackals and deepest pockets west of the Mississippi. From ruthless purges and reckless expansion, to cover-ups and conspiracies coloring every client's file, the feudal lords of BP&H gorge themselves on the fat of the land until an attempted hostile take-over bloodies the water, setting off a chain reaction of betrayal, intrigue and murder. Through it all Sullivan keeps score and returns volley as the BP&H empire slowly rots from within, decimating countless lives and businesses in a frenzy of shady deals, bad credit, and botched assassinations.
Capitalizing on the hideous strengths demonstrated in his first novel, 2006's Book of Business, A Novel of the Law, Nathan lays out an epic menagerie of bad acts and actors--the novel is rife with damnations big and small, boasting a cast of characters and conflicts that rivals War and Peace. But where Tolstoy inevitability granted redemption, Nathan offers only further abyss; neither God nor man can save these unscrupulous solicitors as they chase the corporate buck into hell itself.
I myself am not a lawyer and know next to nothing of the cat's cradle of civil law legalese that peppers the work. But I do understand power plays and am happy to report that however particular the language of BL gets, the motions and meanings themselves are all classic tragedy and remain compelling despite all the insider winks and word play. What's more, the novel is a surprisingly brisk read--Nathan opens hard and gets even harder, dispensing with the gun on the mantle for the excruciating spectacle of watching a yard-long shank eviscerate its victim inch by inch.
A perfect companion for a cross-country flight, Bad Law makes childish mincemeat of other works of legal fiction in that there are no happy endings, no third-act long-shot appeals for mercy, or voluntarily mended ways. In the permanent night of Will Nathan's mind the world can only be discerned the glint of the knife as it changes hands, becoming either a weapon or a tool, though ever at the forfeit of the welder's life.
