My Fourth Year in Middle School The Truth About Teaching is a riveting tale of one teacher's journey in transitioning careers and becoming an effective teacher to the students she serves. This book provides insight on how to cope as a new teacher adjusting to a new working environment. It richly recalls the obstacles faced teaching at-risk, African-American youth at a southern middle school for eight years. The author centers the book around her experiences and lessons learned as a classroom teacher.
She takes time to express the difficulties associated with transitioning careers from military service to becoming a new teacher learning how to foster relationships among colleagues and students.
The book can assist individuals entering the field of education not really knowing what to expect and create a discussion for new teacher expectations as well as motivation to continue in the profession while balancing your personal life.

The fact that I personally know the author made reading this book that much more exciting for me. It’s a quick, interesting read. It's relatable, it’s realistic!Chapter 2 The New Teacher-was one of my favorite chapters because I could definitely relate to being the new teacher in the building. It was interesting to see how much the author experienced within that first year. The fact that the author used true stories hooked me in and it kept me wanting more after this chapter.
Chapter 5 Sad Teacher- “For one, my students learned up front when you do what is asked of you the first time, you never have to worry about being corrected.” This quote stood out to me and it makes a lot of sense. I loved how the author talked about her introduction and the wearing of the heels made me giggle. Will someone please share with me how to successfully wear heels every day? The author is too cool!
Chapter 6 Building Relationships was an emotional roller coaster type of chapter. To know what the author went through and to come out strong is incredibly admirable. This was probably my favorite chapter of the book.
Chapter 8 Same Zone, Different School – The author’s introduction as transitioning to another school zone was hilarious. I could hear the author say everything she stated she said. I could feel the emotions as the author wrote, “Well, I might as well had spit in everyone’s face because I suddenly became the enemy.”
Chapter 10 The Truth is a great chapter that sums up several important “truths” through the journey of teaching.
Overall, great book! I can’t wait to read the next one.

My Fourth Year in Middle School The Truth About Teaching eBook LaTilya Williams Reviews
As I was reading this book, I actually heard the voice of the author, speaking her truth. It was clear as a bell, and I share her beliefs that a good teacher is a lifeline to some children. Just knowing that a teacher actually believes in you is tremendous to a child. I'm very encouraged to know that there are still teachers out there that actually care about teaching the children and not just teaching to the test. I've got grandchildren that are now in school and it is my fervent hope that they have teachers in their lives like Mrs. LaTilya Butler who have gotten the fundamental skills of teaching down and the love of teaching truly embedded in her heart. For those children who's lives you've touched, for those parents who know that you've shown their children the love and guidance needed to succeed I say thank you! For those parents who didn't care or didn't notice that their children were in jeopardy of failure or something a lot worst, I say wake up and see your children before it is to late and I pray that they have a teacher, mentor or friend like Mrs. Butler to care for and guide them. To young teachers coming up in the system, take heart, be a blessing to the children whoses futures have been placed in your hands. This book is an quick read, but it is an excellent read. It tells you in real speak what it is actually like to be in the school system and in the classroom. To be the object of gossipy coworkers, to be looked up to by children in your care, to be cursed out by both students and their parents... it's real and is written so that its clear that if you love teaching press on and don't be dissuaded by those are only there for a paycheck. To them it's a job, to those that are there for the love of teaching it is a career and a calling. Thank you Mrs. Butler!
Sincerely, Ms. Audrey Schmitz

If you're in an educational field, you'll know that between grading papers, lesson planning and whatever else comes up that finding time to read for pleasure can be difficult. This book is a quick and enjoyable read. I too taught in a difficult district and saw many similarities. Reading about Dr. Butler's journey will give great insight to anyone that may be considering a career change. I was an elementary teacher for 8 yrs and I know that it takes a special type of person to have a passion to be a middle school teacher, especially given the demographics. I can't wait to read more from Dr. Butler!
